What is SEO

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, what does this mean though? In its most basic form, it is where your website ranks on search engines when certain words are used. This is important as the higher your website ranks the more traffic you will likely generate, which should lead to more business and enquiries. Research shows just how important ranking highly on search engine results pages is, with the first page of results on a search capturing between 71%-92% of traffic clicks1 it’s a case of: be top or be left behind.

How SEO works?

As Google is the most used search engine with over 92% of the market share2 we will provide an idea of how SEO works using their processes.

When a user types in a search term, Google’s algorithms set to work analysing hundreds of different factors to pick out the best and most relevant information to answer that particular search3.

Some of the most well-known factors of the algorithms are: the freshness of the content, the number of times the search term appears, the user experience provided on the page and the frequency of other users visiting the site. So it isn’t just one or two factors that control the order of the results on Google it is a whole host of factors all working together.

Why is SEO important?

When you are starting to consider how best to advertise your business you may be thinking of going down the route of some paid adverts. Whether that be on specific websites and social media, via Google AdWords or the more classic methods of print, radio and television. Whilst all of these can be highly effective and we certainly wouldn’t discount them, we would always suggest thinking about SEO.

The way we like to think of this is that even with the supreme level of customer targeting available through advertising in social media, for example, you are still putting your product or service in front of people who aren’t actively searching for your offering. Whereas with SEO there are potential customers actively searching for what you are offering, and by placing yourself as close to the top of those searches as possible you are giving yourself the best chance possible of converting that interest into business.
